One thing I was happy to see is a PRINTED owners manual instead of a disk like the parent company GRE. Like a couple of other reviews have mentioned you don't get a power supply (wall wart) or programming cable & programming software but are costly options after paying the high price for this unit. I am happy to say yes to both of the questions. One of my questions was if my computer programming cable & software (Win500) for my Grecom PS600 would work on this unit. A few of the questions I ask the RS sales personal they couldn't answer. Who knows what the future will hold.Īfter owning a GRECOM PS600(see my review on Eham on that unit) desktop scanner for over a year now (Grecom makes this RS scanner) I bought one of these units for $299 on the black Friday Sale. Many Police departments have rejected encryption for now. There seems to be problems with digital radio that so far has been a real issue when encryption is used. I highly recommend the RadioShack Pro-106 until the police start to encrypt all communications, that is if they do. The rubber duck antenna supplied is just adequate. I have the Antennacraft ST-2 and it works great with the Pro 106. The Pro 106 seems to have far better audio than the Uniden units I have used including the newest versions.Ī good scanner antenna is also needed. So I recommend the Pro-106 for now as you will have to mess with the Uniden scanners anyways. But that type of programming is not complete. The Uniden units just need you to enter your zip code and then it is ready. Compared to the Uniden units with pre-programmed software, the RadioShack Pr0-106 is a lot harder to program. Software available makes programming fairly easy but does require some learning in order to make it happen. Programming will require learning about trunking, talkgroups, and objects. AP-25 II is slowly gaining ground and will be more predominant as cities and states upgrade their radios. Not sure if firmware updates in the future will allow for AP-25 II monitoring. Better audio than the Uniden scanners I have used including the newest Unidens.ĪP-25 is the first version only on this scanner. The scanner is fast with great audio quality. The most recent firmware update as of Augis the 2.1 which corrects scanner programming errors in the marine VHF and UHF frequencies. The RadioShack USB to scanner cable is about $40 and is a must have for computer monitoring and programming. The scanner is great but you do need to learn how to program it. All software and accessories will work with either scanner as they are the same. This model was originally made by GRE but the factory was shut down.so Whistler bought the rights and now manufacture the very same scanner and re-named it the Pro 651. Purchased this off of Fleabay and got a really good deal on it.
